Rhinoplasty is an operation in which the external appearance of the nose is changed; among aesthetic operations it is the most in-demand and the most complex. There are a number of misconceptions or myths about rhinoplasty. Below we present these myths under 13 headings.

Rhinoplasty can only be performed in certain seasons of the year.

Rhinoplasty can be performed in any season, on any of the 365 days of the year. Patients simply need to follow the doctor's season-specific advice.

Pain is inevitable in rhinoplasty.

Thanks to the microsurgical techniques used today and the advances in anaesthesiology, discomfort during and after the operation varies from person to person and is managed with painkillers.

The use of nasal packing is mandatory, and its removal is painful.

In a certain proportion of our patients, no packing is needed at all. In cases where packing is necessary, silicone splints are used instead of classic packing. Silicone splints do not cause pain while in the nose or when being removed. At the same time, thanks to a special channel in the silicone splints, patients are able to breathe.

Bruising and swelling last for weeks after the operation.

In a certain proportion of our patients, bruising and swelling around the eyes are not observed at all. In the patients where we do observe them, the bruising and swelling resolve within 7–10 days.

After rhinoplasty the nose collapses.

When the supports that hold the nasal tip and dorsum are properly preserved or reconstructed during the operation, no collapse is observed even many years later.

There are breathing problems after the operation.

If the operation is performed according to the appropriate principles, there is no breathing problem; on the contrary, pre-existing breathing problems are resolved. There may only be a temporary nasal obstruction during the first 3–4 weeks after surgery, due to intranasal swelling and crusting, which does not seriously disturb the patient.

Rhinoplasty is performed only when there is a problem with the external appearance.

In many cases, pathologies in the external appearance of the nose cause nasal obstruction. In these cases, in order to relieve the nasal obstruction, the external appearance of the nose must also be changed — that is, rhinoplasty must be performed.

After rhinoplasty the nasal tip is over-rotated and the dorsum is over-scooped.

The main goal of a successful rhinoplasty is to achieve natural results, suited to the person's face, in which the nasal tip is not over-rotated and the dorsum is not over-scooped, and in which it cannot be sensed that the nose has undergone rhinoplasty.

The sense of smell is impaired after the operation.

Although in some patients the sense of smell may weaken for a few days after the operation because of intranasal swelling and crusting, permanent loss of smell is not observed.

Rhinoplasty should not be performed during menstruation.

According to many scientific studies and to our practice, no problematic situation is observed when rhinoplasty is performed during menstruation.

It is not possible to go out in public or return to work for a long time after the operation.

It is possible to return to work and social activities 7–10 days after the operation.

In men, rhinoplasty results in a feminine-looking face.

If your operation is performed in accordance with your face and with the criteria of a male nose, the masculine appearance of the face is preserved.

Rhinoplasty is possible with a laser or by passing a single thread through the nose.

These types of techniques are mostly commercial in purpose. Although lasers are actively used in many areas of otorhinolaryngology and head & neck surgery, their indispensability or necessity for rhinoplasty has not been confirmed. Because rhinoplasty is a complex operation performed after precise calculations and serious planning, it is not possible to achieve the result of rhinoplasty with a knot made by passing a single thread through the nose.
